Raf De Bont recently gave an interview on the history of dolphinariums with Belgium’s Radio 1 on “De wereld van Sofie.”
A (translated) synopsis: When did dolphinariums come into existence? And how can the success of all those dolphin shows be explained? “It is no coincidence that all dolphinariums in Europe were founded in the 1960s,” says professor of history of science Raf De Bont. “The TV series ‘Flipper’ gave a human and intelligent face to the dolphin, and the dolphinariums wanted to profit from that.”
